Schedule Dog Training Time on Your Calendar

Is your dog worth 15 minutes a day? Of course she is. What if you made a training appointment at least 3 times per week on your calendar for 30 minutes? What if you fed at least one of your dog's meals each day during a training session? Instead of just going for a 15-minute walk, do a 15-minute training session while walking. There has got to be time in there for your dog. Ideally, you train your dog at least 15 minutes per day every day including a couple minutes before you go for a walk or during a walk, before meals, while you are playing fetch (ask for sits, downs, and stays before you throw the ball). But, why not schedule longer sessions at least a couple times a week?

Lexie Smith trains Gracie to help her with daily activities

PELL CITY – A local resident is training a service dog to help her with day-to-day activities.

Lexie Smith has been training her 9-month-old Great Dane, Lexie’s Blue Angel of Grace, or Gracie for short, for about four months.

“I have been training dogs and horses all my life,” Smith said. “I trained dogs with a police department in Georgia, and that made me a lot more aware of what they are capable of.”

“I researched service dogs for over two years,” she said. “I had a lot of questions about getting a service dog, because I wasn’t sure how much one could really help me.”

Smith said once she decided to train a service dog, she researched even further on what type of dog to get, eventually settling on a Great Dane.

Smith said Gracie will eventually learn to pull Smith’s wheelchair and shopping cart.

How to Find a Trainer

Finding a trainer for your dog is vitally important to your dog's happy acclimation to your household and development as a pet. Keep in mind when researching trainers that there is no certification or licensing process of any kind to be a dog trainer. Therefore, the educational level and background of each trainer will vary widely. Practically anyone can call themselves a dog trainer or behaviorist, but this does not mean they are capable of helping you train your dog. If a trainer makes exaggerated claims, or uses sales pitches that sound like something from a used car salesman or guarantees, walk away! Moreover, there are a variety of different philosophical approaches to dog training, from correction-based training to positive reinforcement training to clicker training to pure positive. When interviewing a trainer, be sure to ask them what their methods are and what their approach to dog behavior and learning is.

I don’t know about you but I have a bone to pick with the issue of online dog training. A dog trainer and former vet tech, Julie Bjelland Lokhandwala, is now offering live consults through her website, WebDogtrainer.com.  It seems she’s found her niche for expanding the scope of her business via the Internet in ways most of us never thought possible—perhaps because it’s not.

To me, dog training online seems much akin to practicing vet medicine in the same format—it just doesn’t work. Not only is there much that can be misinterpreted when personal interaction is only available via video, but there seems something vaguely spammy about selling one-on-one dog training services through this medium.
