Another List of Favorite Dog Training Books

I admit to having a wary eye when I come across the term K-9 as in my mind it has become correlated with more aggressive forms of dog training. But that doesn't seem to be the case here; at least most of the books on her top 13 list are ones I have read, wanted to read, or heard of!

Here are my 13 tops picks for must read books to help you become a better trainer of dogs. (in no specific order)

1) Kicked, Bitten and Scratched. Life and Lessons at the Worlds Premiere Exotic Animal Training School by Amy Sutherland. A great example of why you need to know basic behavior of the animal you are training to be effective and humane.

2) The Other End of the Leash by Patricia McConnell PhD. An ethologist who explains why human behavior and canine behavior sometimes just doesn't mesh well and how we can work to change that for the better.

3) How to Teach a New Dog Old Tricks by Ian Dunbar. Lure reward training and the theories behind it. A great dog's point of view look at training. For all age dogs. (with great photos) A must have for anyone working with deaf dogs.

Fleas Explained by a Veterinarian

Interesting article, if not exactly thrilling, about the life cycle of fleas. By a veterinarian, so he does suggest consulting your vet on what to do. The Secret Life of Fleas

Adult fleas aren’t very clever and they aren’t particularly sneaky. (In this way, they are often thought of as being similar to people—the teenagers are always much brighter than their parents.)

If you can pass an eye test at the DMV, you should be able to see adult fleas on your pet. Adult fleas want to spend all of their time on your tasty pet, so they aren’t hard to find. Both male and female fleas love to drink blood, and after a good blood meal the females will lay about 40 eggs per day. Once the feasting has ended, most fleas leave little black specks on your pet—these specks are called “flea dirt,” which is a nice term for flea poop!

Prove to your teenagers that you still have smarts, and ask your veterinarian which is the best product for the family pet.

I Love Finding Articles on Positive Dog Training

Good to see the word spreading about rewards-based dog training... that's as opposed to punishment or threat-based. I don't agree that it's because collar corrections are dangerous for small dogs, though they certainly can be. I just think rewards are the way to go!

Does Your Large Dog Counter-Surf?

This is a nice article about why you shouldn't let your dog get into things on your counters, and what to do about it. She writes about large dogs, but it reminded me of my Basenji who could reach unbelievable things off the counter. I still rememeber the plastic bag of fluffy white tapioca flour that she shook all over the living room!

But more to the point, dear old Martha, our first dog together, once scored an entire loaf banana bread cooling on the counter! That was over 20 years ago, and I did learn my lesson!

Dog Training In The Kitchen

Anyone who owns a large dog knows what counter surfing is. For those of you who don't: it is when the dog puts his paws on the kitchen counter in search of anything appealing. Until you have experienced this canine phenomenon you have no idea how far a dog can extend his otherwise stubby neck when a highly valued item is just a few more inches away.
I consider myself an expert on the subject as a dog trainer and dog owner I have, over the years, personally lost: baked goods, tissues, medication, a bologna sandwich and on one occasion the contents of an entire dinner plate in this manner. It can be humorous, but this habit is definitely dangerous.
Before I discuss what you can do I will explain why you should do something immediately.

Sprite isn't a quaking, cowering dog.

But she is shy.

When I picked her out, both her breeder and I thought she was an extrovert. And she is -- when she's someplace she knows well with dogs and people she likes. So, she was pushy among her litter mates and pushy here at my house.

All that changes when we walk out the door. She's barky at other dogs because she doesn't trust them. She pulls back from strangers' hands because she assumes they might be trouble. (This from a dog who hasn't had a bad day in her life.)

Dog Training for the Theater

Dogs are trained to do so many things, but I hadn't run across this particular application: training a dog to be in a school play. This newspaper article is from Chicago-area trainer Jeff Millman. There are links in the article to his dog training forum. I haven't spent time there myself, but someone I know mentioned it was a favorite of hers.

Train Your Dog To Be In A School Play - Part 1 of 2

In February I was contacted in my Forums by Jeanne, one of my private clients, asking about how to teach her dog to Take a Bow. I gave her some suggestions and filmed a short video and posted it of my dog Ranger Taking a Bow. She mentioned that she wanted Seamus to learn this trick to perform it in her daughter's play, Annie.

Seamus' role expanded and he was used in four scenes in the play. Through a lot of hard work and a little bit of help from me, Jeanne successfully completed her goals and Seamus was in the school play. I thought that Jeanne and Seamus did such a fantastic job that I asked if she would like to be featured in order to help others learn from her excellent training work.

Dog Training in Various Places

Dog training needs to happen in a variety of locations. Even more than humans, dogs learn in connection with specific locations.. even the difference between one side of your living room and the other can matter in how well a dog responds to what you ask of him or her.

Here's a really neat class in Seattle that takes the students all over town to work in many places...

Dog Training Here, There, and Everywhere!

The Seattle Humane Society's newest dog training class, Manners About Town isn't your typical dog class. First of all, class meets in a different location every week and you never know who might show up – rowdy kids one week, distracted shoppers pushing carts the next. I caught up with the group this past weekend in Bellevue's Robinswood park.

Can you imagine your dog on a sit-stay outside the fence at a busy dog park? Or focused on you, practicing a distant down on the edge of a playground?
